I had a booksigning with Monica Burns and a couple other authors this weekend. We had a lot of fun, although Monica sold a ton of books and I only sold one... I'm envious:-). I bought her new print book, Forbidden Pleasures, myself-- I really enjoyed her novella in The Art of Pleasure and can't wait to read more of her stories. If you like erotic historical romance, she's an author to watch!
Monica has a terrific post on her blog about not deriding our books by referring to them as "trashy" or "smut." I agree, but I had to grin at the subject. A couple of weeks ago, at the baby's birthday party, someone asked me what kind of books I wrote. Before I could open my mouth and reply, "Romance," a relative of mine replied, "She writes S-M-U-T." Sigh. Now what am I supposed to say in response to that? I don't argue with relatives, so I remarked politely that one man's romance was another man's smut, and I suppose it is. But really, I write stories about people falling in love. Is that smut? Honestly, I don't think so...
What a bitch. She's lucky you didn't turn to her and say, "And you sell cheap clothes/ lemon cars/ rotten food/ bad medical care/ soggy potato chips / ugly hair cuts/ etc. for a living." Sheesh, can't she see that saying that is a value judgment, not a statement of fact?
