Heck of a thing to be famous for
Virginia Beach, my beloved birthplace, was featured in this Yahoo article about "weird laws to know before you travel." Why? "Virginia Beach, known as a family vacation destination, banned profanity in the early 1990s. Swearing can earn you a $250 fine and up to ten days community service."
I was reminded of this silly law last week, when I drove my daughter and her friend to the beach. There are no-swearing signs posted up and down Atlantic Avenue:
As far as I can tell, the law only applies to Atlantic Avenue and the Boardwalk. So apparently it's perfectly legal for me to swear anywhere else in the five hundred square miles that constitute Virginia Beach, but on the oceanfront, I'm required to curb my potty mouth. Does this law sound stupid (and unconstitutional as hell) to anyone else, or is it just me? It's hard for me to believe that no one has challenged the constitutionality of this law since the early 1990s...

Do they have secret recording devices along the beach so they can figure out who the cussers are? heheh
ReplyDeleteI wondered, is there a list of unacceptable words somewhere? Will I be forced to do ten days community service if I say "hell"? How about "crap"? Or would "blimey" be enough? I need to know that it's safe to say blimey on the beach!
