Negativity

Lydia has an interesting post on negativity, and about the general backstabbing, snarkiness, and pettiness she's encountered since becoming published.

I'm sorry Lydia's had that experience. But I haven't encountered much negativity at all. Okay, there's that whole big blowup with RWA and its graphical standards, but let's face it, that's not aimed just at me. In general, though, I find other writers to be a pretty supportive bunch. Maybe I'm naive and oblivious to the dark swirling undercurrents (I tend to be oblivious to almost everything, so this isn't beyond the realm of possibility), or maybe the e-publishing community is a little different from the rest of the writing community. I find e-published authors in general, and my NCP family in particular, to be extremely helpful, kind, and uplifting. But most of the other romance authors I've encountered in my travels across the Internet have been wonderful, too. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I haven't met many.

Maybe I'm just lucky:-).

  1. To be honest, I'm usually really oblivious--and I am NOT hypersensitive at all. In fact, I usually just don't notice most people being nasty or getting upset until it's REALLY obvious. But about six different things happened all at once in the past 2 weeks that have really exasperated me. Some have been simmering for a while but I considered them flukes while others have just recently occurred. Part of my frustration is that I expected more out of writers than the neurotic bags of ego that I've found too many to be. I'm not actually hurt by any of it, but I am pretty thoroughly flabbergasted. Much of it has nothing in the world to do with me personally. Other stuff has come to a head because of how my first book did/is doing. All in all, though, I just don't GET it!

  2. The New Jersey Romance Writers group is a great group! Everyone there is supportive and welcoming. I know I would not be a published author if I had not joined that organization.

I write for Awe-Struck and NCP--plus I belong to EPIC. Everyone seems inclined to be helpful from what I've seen.

  4. I feel very fortunate to have formed great friendships and shared lots of positive support and encouragement with other writers throughout my career.

Negativity breeds negativity, so I try to stay wayyyy far away from it.
