Lee Goldberg reports that a PublishAmerica author is selling off film rights to his novel on eBay for a minimum bid of $1.3 million. Intrigued by the author's chutzpah, I Googled J.T. Fisher (no relation, I swear) and found him touting his book on PRWeb as a "top ten debut novel." Wow... top ten, huh? But top ten what? Reading through the rest of his article, he says "sales of the popular adventure book have quickly climbed to the top ten percent of Amazon’s book list." Um... top ten is slightly different from top ten percent, dude. Amazon has over a million items, so this means the book is ranked somewhere in the top 100,000. (Actually, currently it's ranked over 500,000, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was ranked at less than 100,000 at one point.) Not quite an honest headline, that.
I also see that the guy is pledging all his royalties to Katrina victims and playing up the similarities between his book and the Gulf Coast disaster. I'm sure he intends to earmark that $1.3 million for charity, too. Darned nice of him, don't you think?
I want to try to remember to check out the bid on eBay. I better be careful to press the "place bid" button. ;)
