$2.99

I confess to being mildly annoyed by indie authors who are publicly stating that they won't buy books priced at less than $2.99 anymore. Could we please not try to pressure each other? I'm pricing books at what I think is a reasonable price. $2.99 strikes me as reasonable for full novels, but not for novellas-- and I have quite a few novellas. Other people want to keep their price at 99 cents because they only have one book so far, or because they feel grateful to their fans, or various other reasons. How about we all just assume we have reasons for what we do, and not try to make others feel guilty about their pricing decisions?

  1. I agree. I've seen a bit of the opposite too, where someone was almost implying that those who moved to the $2.99 were gouging their readers. Like, it was only 1.99 last week, and now you're raising it without any change in the book.

Being new to the game, I treated my June edition as the one where I tried to work out the kinks in formatting. It was cheaper because I knew it probably would have some issues. However, I don't think anyone needed an excuse to increase. It's their book, and they can sell it for whatever the market will bear.

  2. I agree, Mary and I probably should have said that. Implying that people are gouging their fans by raising prices is just as much an effort to pressure other writers into one's way of thinking. I've seen that, too, and I don't like it. People need to be allowed to make their own decisions on pricing without being jumped on by other authors, IMHO.
